You Can Design a Herb Garden

Even if you're show no interest in gardening or are not a pro gardener, you can design a herb garden. It's true -- herbs are some of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow. There are many benefits to growing herbs. Herbs can be grown indoors or outdoors. They can often be used for cooking, making tea, scenting cosmetics and even helping cure ailments. People have been using herbs medicinally for thousands of years. There's no doubt about it -- growing herbs can be a relaxing and beneficial hobby. Even the act of gardening your herbs can be thought of as a form of stress relief! When you start planning your garden, you will need to decide what kind of herbs you want to grow.

Some people like to grow groupings of herbs for a single purpose, such as cooking herbs. Cat lovers often choose the cat-friendly herb garden. Maybe you want to use herbs for fragrancing purposes. There are certain herbs that fit into certain groups. Some herbs are great for more than one purpose. A kitchen herb garden may include herbs like sage, basil, thyme, rosemary and mint. A cat-friendly garden would definitely contain catmint and catnip, as well as any other cat-safe herbs of your choice. A fragrant herb garden would definitely feature lavender, chamomile and lemon verbena.

Of course, you don't have to pick a theme for your herb garden. You can simply choose the herbs that are your favorites for whatever reason. When planting herbs in the same container or garden area, it is important that they require the same growing conditions. In other words, you don't want to put a shade loving herb next to one that needs full sun. Most herbs do prefer sun to shade, so planting your herbs in a sunny spot is always a good idea. You may want to do a little background research before planting, or at least refer to the back of your seed packet for planting information.

There are plenty of websites and books that can help you design a herb garden. One good title is The Complete Book of Herbs: A Practical Guide to Growing and Using Herbs by Lesley Bremess. Any library in your area will have plenty of titles about herb gardening. You will likely find not just gardening articles but also articles about the various uses of herbs. As previously mentioned, most herbs can be used for a multitude of purposes. They truly are the workhorses of the botanical world!
