Creating an Herb Container Garden Plan

Container gardening is an excellent way to grow plants, flowers, even vegetables. This type of gardening is recommended for people with limited outdoor space, people who want to grow indoors or people who want the ultimate flexibility with their garden. Containers can be moved and arranged much easier than a garden that is planted in the ground. Many people like to grow herbs in containers. Creating an herb container garden plan is the first step when it comes to growing herbs in containers.

Herbs are beautiful and useful. They can be used for fragrance, food and sometimes even medicine. Of course, if you want to use herbs for their medicinal properties you should consult your physician and/or a licensed herbalist. When devising your garden plan, you will first need to decide what kind of herbs you want to grow. There are all kinds to choose from. Popular herbs include lavender, chamomile, oregano, sage, rosemary and mint. You will find that many herbs can be used for more than one purpose. Chamomile is very soothing when used for fragrance as well as in tea. Lavender is also a fragrant herb that can be used for cooking and even for its antiseptic properties.

Once you've decided what kind of herbs you want to grow, it's time to learn what kind of growing conditions they need. The good thing about growing herbs in containers is that you can have one herb in one container, or place several herbs that need the same growing conditions in the same container. Containers can be moved to the sun and/or shade as necessary. As for what kind of containers you need, it's good to start small when germinating your seeds then move to a larger container as your herbs grow.

Many people who need an herb container garden plan refer to books on the subject of herb and container gardening. There are certainly lots of them out there to choose from. One comprehensive title is McGee and Stuckey's Bountiful Container: Create Container Gardens of Vegetables, Herbs, Fruits and Edible Flowers by Rose Marie Nichols McGee and Maggie Stuckey. If you want to find more titles, browse the shelves of your local library or bookstore. Gardening is a hot topic and there are lots of resources out there to help you!
