Herb Garden Indoor Growing Tips

If you enjoy gardening and are looking for a leisurely and rewarding project, you should consider an indoor herb garden. There are many herb garden indoor growing kits that you can buy to get an easy start. While you can buy all your supplies separately, it is often easier to use a ready-made kit. You will find them in most any garden center or garden department of your favorite store. They come with the seeds, the containers in which to start the seeds, and of course complete growing instructions.

You may find many of the herb growing kits have a theme. For example, you may want a cat garden for your favorite feline. With a cat garden, you want to place your herbs where your kitty can reach them easily. Examples of plants you may find in a cat garden include grasses like wheat and barley and herbs like catmint and catnip. One of these gardens is perfect for the indoor cat that does not get to chew on greens outdoors. Another type of garden is the kitchen garden. Most commonly grown in a sunny indoor area like your kitchen windowsill, the kitchen garden features herbs that are used for cooking. Examples include chives, oregano, basil, rosemary, thyme and sage.

The first thing you will need to do when growing herbs indoors is germinate your seeds. One old-fashioned way to do this is to soak a paper towel in water, place your seeds on top, and fold the paper towel over the seeds, into a square shape. The moisture and warmth will cause the seed to germinate. An even more efficient way would be the plastic seed starting greenhouse that many kits include. These plastic greenhouses feature seed compartments and can be closed to allow for maximum retention of heat and light.

There are plenty of handy herb garden indoor growing tips that can help you succeed. Consider joining some online groups or participating in online discussions regarding herbs and herb gardening. Often you can learn lots of great tricks from more experienced gardeners and find solutions to any problems you may be having with your garden. Another idea is to read some books on the topic. How to Grow Herbs and Salad Greens Indoors by Joan W. Meschter is an example of a title you may want to check out.
