Choosing an Herb Garden Layout
![]() |
Regardless of whether you want an indoor or outdoor herb garden, you will need to choose an herb garden layout. This means you will need to decide what herb is going to go where. This is important because a good layout can not only make your garden look more attractive it can encourage your herbs to grow stronger and healthier. For example, grouping herbs together that have the same heat, light and moisture requirements is a very good idea. You will find that not only do all the herbs thrive when placed in the ideal growing environment, they look lovely grouped together.
You may want to go a step further and plan your layout by height and color. Once you have a list of herbs that need the same growing conditions, you can start thinking about where each different type of herb should be placed. As a general rule, you want the tallest herbs in the back so they don't obscure the shorter herbs. You may want to do a stairstep type layout with the tallest herbs in the back, the medium height herbs in the middle and the shortest herbs in the front. You will find that although heights and colors may differ a bit between herbs the look will be complementary.
Your layout will vary depending on whether you are planting your garden indoors or outdoors. The most popular type of indoor garden is the kitchen garden, which is a container garden usually grown in a sunny windowsill. Container gardens work well outdoors as well, especially for gardeners with limited space. Another popular outdoor garden idea is what I call the designer garden. You can actually plant your herbs in the shape of a certain object. Examples would include an herb garden in the shape of a butterfly or Celtic knot.
If you are having trouble visualizing your herb garden layout, you should check out some books about herb gardening. Your local library and/or bookstore should have a wide selection from which you can choose. Here are some titles you may want to look for: Herb Garden Design by Faith H. Swanson and Virginia B. Rady, Making an Herb Garden: Beautiful Designs, Plantings and Ornamentation by Catherine Mason and Beautiful, Easy Herbs: How to Get the Most from Herbs in Your Garden and in Your Home by Laurence Sombke.
