The Decorative and Functional Uses for Herb Garden Markers

Herb garden markers are signs that are staked into the ground. At their most functional, they are used to designate what is growing in a particular area. However, these markers have more than just functional uses. They are often quite decorative and can add beauty to your garden area. Some gardeners actually collect vintage markers as a hobby. You don't have to use markers in the garden, either. You can even use them as an interesting piece of home decor. Markers come in many different designs and are made from many different materials.

For example, there are Vermont slate markers that feature carved images of the herbs they are meant to specify. These markers are beautiful, decorative and classic. They look like triangles and feature not only an illustration of the herb but its name in calligraphy. These markers look at home in the garden or even displayed on a wall. Another decorative type of marker are those which are oval and made from terra cotta. These markers are made by Oregon Planet Earth and are meant to be hung on copper stakes. The markers come in a set and make a great gift idea for a garden enthusiast.

Of course, you can make your own garden markers from wood or even stone. If you cannot find wood already shaped into a garden stake at your local craft store, you may want to ask a handyman to cut the wood for you. Or, you can do it yourself with the right tools. Sand the wood and paint it to your liking. A nice solid color like white is good for the base. Then, paint a picture or use a stencil to add the illustration of the herb and paint the name of the herb. If you want to use stone, you can actually find large, flat rocks and use those as markers. There are lots of creative possibilities.

Herb garden markers are a lovely way to mark what herb goes where in your garden. With markers no one will ever wonder what is planted in a certain place. Not only do markers help avoid confusion, they add a finished look to the garden. If you collect antique markers, you may not want to use them. Store or display your antique markers and use new or homemade markers for the garden.
