The Joy of Planting an Herb Garden

Are there any plants more useful than herbs? Most gardeners would say no. Herbs are plants that are cultivated for their culinary use, medicinal use, and/or fragrance. Some herbs are shrubs while others are plants that are not woody in nature. There are hundreds of different herbs that can be grown. Many can be grown indoors as well as outdoors. Planting an herb garden is a rewarding experience that offers many benefits from start to finish. Let's first take a look at the emotional benefits of gardening.

Gardening gets your hands in the dirt and allows you to connect with nature. When you've got your hands in the soil, you are communing with the earth in a special way. Planting a tiny seed and watching it grow into an adult plant is a real accomplishment. You will feel a sense of wonder and pride as you watch this little seed sprout into a plant and grow bigger every day. It is amazing that everything the herb needs to grow up into an adult plant is contained in this tiny seed. Of course, you have to water and nurture the seed, but it contains the ingrained intelligence to be what it is. For example, a mint seed will never grow up to be lavender. It's amazing once you think about how tiny a seed is and how much progress it goes through on the journey to mature plant.

You may have heard that gardening is good for your body as well. While planting a small indoor windowsill garden isn't going to give you a cardio workout, getting down and dirty in a large outdoor garden just might. The acts of bending, shoveling, pulling weeds and hauling water can work your entire body. You'll get exercise without even realizing you're doing it. So, we've explored two benefits of the herb garden -- emotional and physical. Now let's look at some tangible rewards of growing herbs.

Planting an herb garden can pay off because herbs are meant to be used. You can cook with herbs, make tea with herbs and even make scented items like soaps, lotions, candles and potpourri with herbs. Some people even make medicinal supplements and teas from herbs. Of course, you should always consult with your physician and/or a licensed and qualified herbal specialist before using herbs for their medicinal properties. Many herbs are quite safe but some can interact with medications and should not be used.
