Tips for Starting an Indoor Herb Garden

Starting an indoor herb garden is a rewarding and relaxing way to spend your free time. Herbs are plants that are grown for their various uses. Many herbs can be used for seasoning food and beverages, fragrancing soaps and lotions, making potpourri and more. Herbal medicine has been practiced for thousands of years and is still practiced by modern herbalists and alternative healers. There are many options when growing herbs indoors. The first decision you need to make is what kind of herbs to grow.

Culinary herbs are ideal for indoor gardens. Rosemary, sage, thyme, mint, chives, oregano and chamomile are all examples of great herbs to grow inside. You should always plant mint in a container by itself because it can easily overcome your other herbs. The other culinary herbs mentioned can be grown in the same container. You should keep your culinary garden in the kitchen if possible, in a sunny spot. That way when you are ready to use your herbs they are right there for you. Many gardeners and cooks like to clip off fresh herbs and use them as is, while others dry their herbs before use.

You will need to start your herb seeds in small pots before transplanting them. You can actually find seed starting containers that are made from clear plastic and can be snapped closed. This helps keep heat and moisture in which allows for quicker germination. When your sprouts are strong enough you can move them to your preferred container. Some people like using flower pots while others like using rectangular shaped window boxes. Just make sure your container offers enough room for the herbs to grow properly. For precise information about growing conditions, refer to the back of your seed packet.

There are plenty of books, magazines and websites that can teach you more about starting an indoor herb garden. Even socializing with other gardeners can help you. For example, you may want to join an online group devoted to herb gardening. If you have a question while setting up your garden, you can hop online and ask other gardeners. You may learn something you didn't know! Many gardeners belong to both online and real-life clubs, and have libraries filled with gardening books. Education and knowledge is important when it comes to growing herbs that are healthy and strong.
